ABOUT SAFE

SAFE, South Atlanta for the Environment is a community–based e nvironmental health collaborative of residents, community-based organizations, neighborhood groups, governmental agencies, businesses and other stakeholders in Neighborhood Planning Unit-V (NPU-V). The SAFE coalition will be convened and facilitated by Environmental Community Action Inc. (ECO-Action) and will work in cooperation with our partners from grassroots organizations, federal, state, and local agencies, businesses, residents, and others.

• Develop a Community-Based Environmental Health Collaborative;

• Conduct a Multimedia Environmental Assessment;

• Design and Implement a Leadership Training Institute;

• Establish Environmental Priorities;

• Develop an Environmental Risk Reduction Plan;

• Share Lessons Learned with other Communities;

• Ensure the sustainability of SAFE beyond current the funding source

ECO-Action's South Atlanta For The Environment (SAFE) Project awarded $100K

October 15, 2008 marks the beginning of ECO-Action's SAFE Project focused on one of the twenty four Neighborhood Planning Units (NPU) that the City of Atlanta is divided into. The SAFE Project, focused on NPU-V located in South Atlanta, plans to develop a sustainable environmental health collaborative involving residents, community based organizations, municipal and state agencies, a university and local businesses. Through the collaborative, SAFE partners will conduct a multi-media assessment of environmental exposures and establish priorities for risk reduction. Residents will be involved in every step of the project, from identifying potential sources of pollution to setting risk reduction priorities.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded ECO-Action their Community Action for a Renwed Environment (CARE) Grant for $100,000 to carry out their initiative.

ECO-Action is proud to announce victory after months of hearings:

Judge Halts First Coal-Fired Power Plant Proposed in over Twenty Years in Georgia: Public Health and Global Warming Concerns Prevail over Profits

Atlanta, GA (June 30, 2008) – Fulton County Superior Court Judge Thelma Wyatt Cummings Moore issued a decision today effectively halting construction of the first coal-fired power plant proposed in Georgia in over 20 years. The decision overturns an administrative court's ruling that affirmed the state Environmental Protection Division's (EPD) decision to issue an air pollution permit for Dynegy's Longleaf plant. In practical terms, Dynegy cannot begin construction of the plant unless it can obtain a valid permit from EPD that complies with the Court's ruling. The Judge held that EPD must limit the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the plant, a decision that will have far-reaching implications nationwide; this is the first time since the April 2, 2007, Supreme Court decision requiring the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate CO2 that a court has applied that standard to CO2 from an industrial source rather than from motor vehicles.

Our work is based on the intersection of three things --threats to human health, environmental degradation and social injustice. ECO-Action's mission is to help communities organize to confront environmental health threats. ECO-Action serves the general population, but we focus our assistance with communities who are in need of it the most –most often, rural residents, people with limited formal education, people with few resources, women, and people of color.

At ECO-Action, we believe that communities should have the right to clean air, land and water and have a right to participate in the decisions that affect their own lives. Incredibly, many communities do not have that right today. The people most affected by toxic chemical exposure are those who live in low-income communities and communities of color. We believe that people who organize and work collectively to make change, to share resources, and to solve problems will make a difference in their community's health, environment and prosperity.
